A weedy paddle on Beachdale Pond in Voluntown – TheDay.com

Tyler and Heather Barber and their children, Derek, 10, Alexsa, 5, and Emmalyn, 3, set out in their canoe for a paddle on Beachdale Pond in Voluntown on Monday. The pond is covered with duckweed and watermeal, two native aquatic plants that are “probably there all the time,” Charles Lee, environmental analyst with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, said Friday. DEEP staff visited the pond Thursday, he said. The growth filled one cove of the pond, which is surrounded by Pachaug State Forest and has a state boat launch, but other areas of the pond remain open, he said.
